Cucumber
Cucumber is a widely grown creeping vine commonly used as a vegetable across the globe. Indian exporters ship tonnes of cucumbers annually to numerous countries worldwide. Thanks to its versatile uses and health benefits, cucumber exports from India have steadily increased over the years. This growing demand presents an excellent business opportunity for local farmers and exporters in India.
Cucumber Varieties We Export
India exports a variety of premium-quality cucumbers, adhering strictly to national health and safety standards. The main cucumber varieties exported from India include:
Ashley — An heirloom variety known for producing abundant dark green fruits measuring 6 to 8 inches. The fruits slightly taper near the stem and mature in about 65 days. Ashley is resistant to downy mildew and thrives well in hot, humid climates.
Japanese Long Green — This variety features sweet, crisp cucumbers up to a foot long with minimal seeds. It is mild and easy to digest, making it popular for home gardens. A second planting in early summer is recommended for fall harvest.
Pusa Sanyog — An F1 hybrid resulting from Japanese Gynoecious and Green Long of Naples lines, Pusa Sanyog matures early and yields high. Its cylindrical dark green fruits have yellow stripes and crisp flesh, ready to harvest in approximately 50 days.
Pant Khira 1 (PCUC 28) — Developed from indigenous germplasm at Pantnagar and released in 2001, this variety produces cylindrical fruits about 20 cm long with light white stripes. It yields roughly 150 quintals per hectare.
Pant Sankar Khira 1 — A hybrid developed at Pantnagar in 1999 (PCUC 28 X PCUC 8), this cucumber has fruits about 20 cm in length and can yield up to 200 quintals per hectare.
Bush Champion — A compact bush-type cucumber, growing only about 20 cm tall with a spread of 60 cm. Ideal for container gardening or raised beds.
Dasher II — Known scientifically as Cucumis sativus, this early-producing variety yields dark green cucumbers about 8 to 10 inches long. It’s highly productive and exhibits strong disease resistance.
Diva — Diva cucumbers are sweet, seedless, and burpless, with thin, tender skin. This pest-resistant variety is excellent for slicing and pickling, producing heavy yields.
Early Pride — An early maturing variety that continues producing over many weeks. Fruits are dark green, about 8.5 inches long, with crisp and juicy flesh. Ideal spacing is 6 inches between seeds in rows or planting groups 4 to 5 feet apart.
Fanfare — Fanfare cucumbers produce crisp, delicious fruits around 9 inches long. Their compact vines (2 to 3 feet) make them suitable for containers and small garden spaces. This variety also offers good disease resistance.
Poinsette — Poinsette cucumbers are known for a generous harvest of dark green, straight fruits. The plants resist common diseases such as mildews, anthracnose, scab, and angular leaf spot.
